Kathryn's 24th Birthday Cake

Kathryn and I have been friends since 2005 when we met in Bible College, and then we later became roommates.  When we first moved in together (or rather, I moved in with her), we were sharing a one bedroom apartment.  When you share a one bedroom apartment for two years, you have two choices: become best friends or end up hating each other.  Fortunately we ended up becoming best friends, although I later found out that I was guilty of a freezie incident that almost tore us apart in the early days.  Kat has a fabulous blog where she shares day to day musings, great music, pretty Instagrams, and the occasional adventure that she and I have shared.

Kat's birthday is in March, which here in Edmonton, is pretty much still the middle of winter.  So when it came time for her birthday, I really wanted to do something bright and colourful, flowery and spring like.  I decided to give quilling a go.  Quilling is originally a technique used with paper, but it can be done with with thin strips of fondant as well.  It's incredibly time consuming and finicky, but I think the end result looks terrific.

The cake was only 6 inches, and it was Chocolate Cake with an Oreo buttercream.  It was the first time I had ever made Oreo buttercream, and I will admit that I could not stop eating the leftover buttercream.  It was divine, and I'm guessing the fact that I used Double Stuffed Oreos only made it that much better.  When Kat came over and I gave her the cake, I think we ate pretty much half of it in one sitting.

Well Kat, even though it's not your birthday now, Happy Birthday to you!  I have fond memories of devouring this cake.  I can also totally picture us when we're 80, lamenting the fact that we never bought real estate in PEI, still shocked that we missed our exit twice in one night because we were laughing too hard both times, and acting out how one might Flay themselves about, Bobby style.
