Flowers and Motorcycles

Flowers and motorcycles ... sounds like an odd combination I know, but these were actually two different cakes.  The first was for a coworker who was celebrating a birthday in the family.  She picked the flavour, Red Velvet with cream cheese icing, and the colours, black, red and white, and then basically let me have creative say over the cake.  This is what we ended up with:

It was a lot of fun to put the flowers together, and I really love how the red, black and white really pop.  Such a great eye catching colour scheme.

The next cake was made for the family of a good friend of mine, Jill.  Jill and I have been great friends since I first moved to Edmonton about 6 years ago.  In fact, she was the first Edmonton friend I made.  We were drawn to each other because of our respective nerdiness, and we have a ton of goofy pictures from the early years of our friendship to show for it.  Over the years, I've had the chance to get to know her amazing family a little bit too, so last year for her dad's birthday, I got the honour of making this awesome Harley Davidson cake for him.

Take a good close look at the lettering on this cake: I cut those all out by hand, individually, just using a small paring knife.  It was a huge testament to the patience that cake decorating can demand of you.  There is kind of a soothing, relaxing nature to work on such small pieces.  At least, there's a great satisfaction to seeing it finally completed.  The cake, to make up for all the black fondant on top, we have a nice light Vanilla Chocolate Chip cake with vanilla buttercream underneath.

Keep your eyes open, because I'll be posting a few more cakes later that I've done for Jill's family!
