My First Wedding Cake

Back in June of 2010, I got the opportunity to create my first wedding cake.  It was both incredibly exciting and terribly nerve wrecking at the same time.  The bride sent me a few pictures of what she was hoping to have, and all of the inspiration was black and white cakes, with lacy, intricate, beautiful designs.  Given that I had been decorating cakes for not even a year yet, I was hesitant to try anything too fancy or elaborate.  I don't know how the depths of awful I would have felt if I messed up my first wedding cake, let alone the ruin the couple's dreams of a beautiful cake!

So after a lot of brainstorming, I found a design idea that would look gorgeous and intricate, but had a relatively easy method.  Since the wedding was an hour and a half out of town, I decided to play it safe and assemble the cake at the reception hall.  Even with each layer separate and in it's own box, I didn't stop worrying once during the drive out.  Every bump and every hill kept me on edge.  But when I got to the hall, each layer was untouched and unaffected.  The finished product ended up being a four tier cake, two layers being chocolate cake and chocolate buttercream, and the other being vanilla.

I actually got to attend this wedding, so during the reception, I was blessed to hear all kinds of feedback about the cake.  Family, and even strangers, were very complimentary of the cake and my skills.  I'll admit that it was fun to see people's shock when they found out that I had made the cake from scratch myself.  I'll always remember this night as eye opening to me for how easy it is for people to admire and enjoy the beauty of cake decorating.

Cake and cake maker.  That's me!
