DJ Turntable and a Present Cake

A friend of a friend was throwing a big joint birthday party for a couple of her friends, so they asked me to make them a couple of cakes for the party.  The first cake they asked for was a DJ turntable style cake, which intimidated me to no end.  How in the world was I going to do something elaborate like that?  After checking out Google images for lots of inspiration, like this, I suppose:

The cake is made out of a Vanilla quarter sheet cake, 9x12 inches, and then it had a single layer of a 6 inch Vanilla round on top for the fondant record to sit on.  I made all of the knobs and buttons out of fondant too.  Because I had never really made anything like this cake before, and wasn't quite sure what to expect, this cake kept me up until 3am to finish.  The adventures of an amateur cake decorator!

The second cake they wanted me to make was a present cake, which they asked for at the last minute.  Never such a thing as too much cake right?  I want to say that this is probably a 9 inch round, but I can't quite remember for sure.  I do know that it was a Vanilla Chocolate Chip cake with vanilla buttercream though.

Did I fool you?   Did you think that the pink ribbon was fondant?  It's actually real ribbon, since I didn't have a lot of time to put this cake together.  I do love the polka dots though, and you can't get cuter than a girly mix of pink and purple.  The girls sent me pictures later of the cakes on display at the club, on big fancy plates, and they looked great.  I always get a swell of pride when I get to see glimpses of my cakes on display and being enjoyed by other people.

  1. I love that you were able to take something as elaborate as a turn table, and simplify it, and you can still tell what it is, AND it looks really good! That's talent.

I wasn't sure if the ribbon was real or not (before you told us), but now I'm wondering if you've ever made a ribbon like that? Do you know how to make shiny fondant?
